Alasdair Haynes, chief executive and founder of Aquis Exchange is stepping down from his role, and instead assuming the position of president.

Announcing his departure on social media, industry heavyweight Haynes cited health reasons as the reason behind the decision.

David Stevens, current COO of Aquis Exchange is set to take over as chief executive with immediate effect, The TRADE understands, while Richard Fisher will step into the joint role of CFO and COO.

Haynes has nearly 50 years of experience across the industry, working in several high profile roles across the equity space, including as CEO of Chi-X Europe and ITG International, and of course Aquis.

The TRADE awarded Haynes with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018, recognising his significant and enduring impact on the industry.

“I will remain close to the business that I love, but in a less demanding capacity […] Moving away from being the CEO is bittersweet for me, but it’s definitely not goodbye – One’s health must be taken seriously and so I am very happy that in my new role as President, this enforced pulling back from day-to-day responsibilities, will allow me to continue to play a part in the Aquis story,” said Haynes.

“I really look forward to the future, whatever it may hold. It will undoubtedly be different but as all of you know, I have never been frightened of a challenge!”

Aquis confirmed that Haynes’ move will not impact the cash offer for the business by SIX Exchange Group, reiterating that the requisite majorities of shareholders have already voted in favour of the SIX offer. The deal is set to complete in Q2 2025.

Stevens said: “The future ahead for Aquis is incredibly bright, with many opportunities available to us.  I am looking forward to guiding Aquis through the coming months and beyond. The Group has an incredibly strong leadership team, including CFO and now, COO Richard Fisher who has been an integral part of Aquis’ management for the past four years, along with an exceptional cohort of employees who work tirelessly every day to deliver on our vision of creating and facilitating better markets for a modern economy.”
